Snyder v. Phelps – Thank you and the road forward

by on Jun.15, 2010, under Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, News

Dear Friends,

On behalf of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder’s family, words cannot express our gratitude to you, our incredible supporters who have done so much to help this great cause!

We especially want to thank you for all your efforts and help in getting 48 states plus D.C, to join the states’ amicus brief written by Attorney General Steve Six of Kansas. Words cannot express how grateful we are! If you would like to view the map that shows the timing of when each state joined the brief, please click here: http://www.matthewsnyder.org/Governor.html. In addition, we are honored to have U.S. Senator and Majority Leader Harry Reid file a separate brief with the signatures of 41 of his colleagues.   If you are interested in reading the briefs filed to date, please visit the website at this link: http://www.matthewsnyder.org/Documents.html.  Also, here is a link to an article summarizing the above that appeared on Memorial Day in the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/30/AR2010053003018.html.

Going forward, we want to be able to communicate with all supporters as fast as possible.  For example, we want to let everyone know when Fred Phelps’ brief is filed and posted on our website — along with any briefs from people or groups that support Mr. Phelps and are against Mr. Snyder.  So, we have created a new Facebook page and Twitter account which will allow us to post updates and developments more quickly and insure they reach all of you. So, if you are on Facebook already, please go to our new PAGE named: United Support for Al Snyder and Against Military Funeral Protests” which can be found at this link: http://www.facebook.com/unitedmatthewsnyder – please click “like.” From now on this is where all our official information and updates will be posted. In coming weeks and months, all new information will be posted there, so please join ASAP. If you are not on either Facebook or Twitter, but would like to be added to our email list, please send your email to mailinglist@matthewsnyder.org.

If you are not yet on Facebook and would like to be it is very easy and free to join. You can join Facebook and our page above by visiting www.Facebook.com and create an account (which is free). Then, search for our Facebook PAGE named United Support for Al Snyder and Against Military Funeral Protests” and join it by clicking “like”.

Also, if you have a Twitter account, please follow us @snydercase (need the @ because it is twitter language signifying a single account name). Or, of you are not yet on Twitter, again, it is free and easy to join! Just go to www.Twitter.com and follow the instructions then look up @snydercase to follow us!

As you all know, our goal is to bring an end to the reign of terror and abuse that has been unnecessarily inflicted on hundreds of grieving families of U.S. service members killed in defense of our nation. The significance of this case cannot be overstated. It may determine Constitutional limits on the First Amendment, and whether freedom of speech supersedes the right of families to mourn with dignity. This will be a test of whether we as a nation, with full legal justification, have the decency to provide the men and women of our military with the resolute support they deserve whenever their rights are violated.

Again, Al Snyder, his family, my law firm and I cannot thank you enough.  Feel free to forward this email to all of your friends.

 Sincerely,

Celebrate Memorial Day With Sincerity!

“With Memorial Day on Monday, it would be an ironic disappointment if we can’t get all 50 states to support military families. Our military deserves our support. Don’t let Virginia or Maine disappoint our military by not supporting the Amicus Brief,  Snyder V. Phelps

Snyder V. Phelps Maine and Virginia Hold Out

by on May.28, 2010, under Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, News

48 States are on board, but WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH VIRGINIA and MAINE ASAP!

Dear friends:

The support you have provided to help Al Snyder accomplish his mission of getting all 50 states on board the amicus brief in support of Snyder v. Phelps to help stop protests at military funerals is outstanding!  But, you are not going to believe this.  Virginia is the first state to affirmatively recommend to its Attorney General that the Commonwealth of Virginia NOT participate in an amicus brief.  The residents of Virginia should be sick to their stomach!

Here is the good news.  Many, many states have specifically told me that the public outcry has helped their respective state make a decision to join the Kansas amicus brief in support of Mr. Snyder and in support of our military and grieving families.  Here is your chance to tell the Attorney General of Virginia that he still has time to decide to do the right thing. The Attorney General has the final decision and can – within his power and discretion – choose not to act according to the recommendation above. So, he still has time to decide to join the brief on behalf of the Commonwealth of Virginia!

It does not matter what state that you are from…we are all Americans who value and cherish the freedom our military affords us.  Please call, email and fax Virginia ASAP TODAY!  The telephone number is (804) 786-2071 and the fax number is (804) 786-1991, the website is: www.vaag.com.  Also, please contact his campaign headquarters to let them know, telephone (703) 766-0635, 10560 Main Street, Suite 218, Fairfax, VA 22030, http://www.cucunelli.com AND the Republican Party of Virginia: Chairman Pat Mullins, telephone (804) 780-0111, fax (804) 343-1060, address: The Richard D. Obenshain Center,  115 E. Grace Street, Richmond, VA 23219, website: http://www.rpv.org/about/contact.asp.

Every call, email and fax will help us get Ken Cuccinelli, the Attorney General of Virginia to do the right thing and join the brief! Please tell him that he will embarrass the Commonwealth of Virginia if he does not join the brief immediately.  Virginia is the home of the Pentagon and has one of the highest concentrations of military installations and military retirees.  The residents of Virginia need our help. Don’t let up until Virginia joins and we update our interactive map located at www.matthewsnyder.org.   We only have hours left so time is of the essence.

After that and if you still have time, also contact the only other holdout – Maine.  The Attorney General of Maine is Janet Mills, telephone (207) 626-8800, fax (207) 287-3145, email janet.mills@maine.gov, website: http://www.maine.gov/ag/

With Memorial Day on Monday, it would be an ironic disappointment if we can’t get all 50 states to support military families.  Our military deserves our support. Don’t let Virginia or Maine disappoint our military by not supporting this cause.

We have until the end of the day on Memorial Day, Monday May 31, 2010 to CONVINCE MAINE AND VIRGINIA TO DO THE RIGHT THING and JOIN THE BRIEF! We need your help ASAP.  This is our last chance so please, please don’t give up or take no for an answer.  Al Snyder won’t give up or take no for an answer.

Thank you so very much and Al Snyder thanks you as well.

Snyder v. Phelps and a request to please call and fax the holdouts ASAP!

by on May.25, 2010, under Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, News

Dear Friends,

NEWS and one last request ASAP please!

1. Al Snyder filed his brief at the U.S. Supreme Court yesterday. Click here to read it, or visit www.matthewsnyder.org, and click on “Documents”.

2. As of last night, 24 out of 50 states are “ON BOARD” and have agreed to join the amicus brief drafted by the Attorney General Steve Six of Kansas and distributed Monday, May 17th through the National Association of Attorneys General. Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Please see the interactive map that shows which states are “ON BOARD”, which states are still actively considering, and which we have not heard from and are still on the fence.

REQUEST ASAP – PLEASE CALL THE ATTORNEYS GENERAL TODAY in California, Florida, Illinois, New York, North Carolina and Texas ASAP! All their phone and fax numbers can be found at www.matthewsnyder.org.  WE NEED TO GET THEM ON BOARD to stop protests at military funerals by this Friday, May 28th! To make it as easy as possible for you to help us accomplish this, all the telephone numbers and fax numbers can be found by scrolling over each state on the interactive map.   If you have time, call the remaining states.  Keep calling until all states agree to support grieving military families!

If a state joins the Kansas brief there is very little, if any, expense to the state.  At most, it would take one state attorney an hour or two to review the Kansas brief.  In short, the time and expense for each state is nominal, at most. Joining this brief is, morally, the right thing to do and is consistent with states’ interests.

Again, thank you ever so much for your efforts and support

NEED HELP NOW: Snyder v. Phelps – Al Snyder’s request for a favor

by on May.12, 2010, under Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, News

Dear Friends,

Al Snyder and I are asking for your help NOW re: the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case, Snyder v. Phelps to help stop protests at military funerals! At your earliest opportunity, please:

1. Print the attached letter – which can also be found by clicking here.
2. Sign and mail the letter to BOTH your Governor and state Attorney General.  Ready to print mailing labels of the addresses for both your Governor and state Attorney General can also be found by clicking here. The more letters sent the better!
3. Then, please forward this email to your entire address book and ask your friends to assist Mr. Snyder by mailing the attached letter and forwarding this email to all of their friends. If you are on Facebook, please post this message on your Wall too.
4. Check the interactive map of the United States regularly in coming days on www.matthewsnyder.org to see which states are supporting this case; which we have heard are actively considering it and which we have not yet heard from and need to be contacted ASAP!

THIS WILL TAKE YOU ONLY ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES and every person counts – every letter counts!  Each letter and each one of us makes a difference.  All of us together can make a big difference. But we ALL need to do this NOW! Please complete steps 1-3 above.

All of our men and women serving in the Armed Forces are entitled to dignity and respect and Mr. Snyder won’t give up until they get it.  But, he needs your help to get the job done. Al Snyder wants to thank you for your support, time, effort and help and thanks you very much in advance for mailing letters to your Governor and state Attorney General.

To help stop protests at military funerals, the objective of this request for help is to GET ALL 50 STATES to sign ONE AMICUS BRIEF which is being drafted by the Kansas Attorney General.  On May 3, 2010, I wrote a letter to the remaining 49 states requesting that each state join the brief being filed by Kansas .  In a few short days, North Dakota agreed to join the brief and Maryland, Illinois and Massachusetts  have specifically stated that their respective states are currently determining whether or not to join the brief.  All states can join it simply by contacting the Attorney General of Kansas, Steve Six, but the deadline is June 1st and they need time to review and decide! If a state joins the Kansas brief (details below), there is very little, if any, expense to the state.  At most, it would take one state attorney an hour or two to review the Kansas brief.  In short, the time and expense for each state is nominal, at most.

Here are some more details about this case and our current plea for help. This tragic case will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court this coming October: Snyder v. Phelps. Here is a link to a video that summarizes this whole thing in a few minutes which aired on Good Morning America on April 1st – http://bit.ly/MatthewSnyderStory and a link to a story that appeared in many U.S. newspapers a few weeks ago (thousands of articles have been written about this case/situation): http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100413/ap_on_re_us/us_funeral_protests_2

This case is about hundreds of military families that have been victimized by Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church .  Stated differently, it is also about approximately 300 million decent Americans VERSUS approximately 70 cult members (i.e., Phelps and his family) that are harassing people at funerals. There are currently in existence 2 Federal and approximately 47 state laws designed specifically to stop this harassment.  In my judgment, no matter what the U.S. Supreme Court decides in this case, either these existing laws become unconstitutional or will likely be re-written to comply with the decision.

Thankfully, due to your incredible generosity and the generosity of hundreds of thousands of other Americans and other supporters from all over the world, we have already raised all the money needed. Importantly, I am working on this case pro bono as is my law firm and not one penny is going to legal fees. Many other people are also helping pro bono, because we all share an intense desire to help insure members of our military are treated with the basic human decency and the respect they deserve.

There are almost 1M total supporters of this cause on Facebook. Our main page is entitled I Support Al Snyder in His Fight Against Westboro Baptist Church”, the new one designed to bring all 1 million together is United Against Westboro Baptist Church!” – please encourage everyone you know to join it!  In addition, the American Legion, the VFW and their 1.5 million members and many other military organizations and groups are supporting this as are a variety of other people. As both Michael Moore AND Bill O’Reilly have recently said: “All decent Americans support you.”

Thank you so very much for your interest and support!
